BIG LIMBO PRESENTS: KŌYA + now & STEPHANIE SANTIAGO // LIVE ALT GROOVES

  • Grow 98c Wallis Road London, England, E9 5LN United Kingdom (map)

Record Label and Hackney-based studio Big Limbo invites you to an alternative world music showcase from two bands with members from around the globe.

Kōya are a multi-disciplinary band born in London. With members from Paris, Buenos Aires, Trieste & Kent – their ideology is based on blending global influences and being open to learning from different cultures and celebrating uniqueness through multiculturalism. Intricate harmonies, hints of Latin groove and Ennio-Morricone-inspired guitar and piano soundscapes meet on the corner of a circle to debunk any preconceptions that you may or may not have formed.

Kōya's work is summed up in a contemporary sound captured at Big Limbo Studio – a recording studio & community space for the arts which Kōya co-founded together in 2019.

now

now was founded in 1998 by songwriter Justin Paton with the aim of bringing together adventurous multi-instrumentalists who are as much in love with electronics as guitars, tambourines and classical instruments. To date, the band’s live line-up has varied from Justin solo to double-figures and has involved collaborations with such noted underground musicians as Damo Suzuki (Can) and Charles Hayward (This Heat).

Live, now are capable of effortlessly switching between melodic songs and energetic improvisation. This versatility has led to them performing in a variety of venues both inside and outside the UK, from outdoor festivals to gallery-based sound-art and live film-scores, as well as shared bills with such acts as Stereolab, Andrew Weatherall, Faust, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Insides, Plaid and Gavin Russom.

Stephanie Santiago

Born in South London to Colombian musician parents – her father an accordionist, her mother a singer – cumbia and salsa filled Stephanie’s childhood. But like anyone, she needed to find her own way, to discover London’s multifarious subcultures, to get lost in the energies of youth music.
