CANALSIDE SESSIONS // LIVE WORLD MUSIC // SIMO LAGNAWI

  • Grow 98c Wallis Road London, England, E9 5LN United Kingdom (map)

Join us canalside in Hackney Wick for ‘Canalside Sessions’ every Sunday.

Master conga player Williams Cumberbache and special guests lead proceedings from Grow’s outdoor floating stage whilst you enjoy brunch classics with Grow twists from our kitchen and drinks menu.

Kick back on our garden terrace and watch boats float down the River Lea whilst you treat yourself to hearty, homemade food, and signature to the backdrop of world-class live music.

This week Williams Cumberbache meets Gnawa London is the project of Moroccan Berber Simo Lagnawi. A wholehearted expression of devotion, Lagnawi was raised in the Gnawa tradition and is an award-winning ambassador for Gnawa music, remaining true to his musical heritage. Since moving to London in 2008, Lagnawi has established himself as the UK’s leading Guembri player, and has sought to spread Gnawa music throughout the culture in a variety of ways. Whether through crossover groups such as Electric Jalaba and the Gnawa Blues All-Stars, or through hosting traditional ceremonial evenings – known as Lilas – the intention is always to bring the same healing energy through to the fore in each new creation.

Lagnawi was nominated for 2 Songlines awards in 2014, for Best Newcomer and Best Artist, and his first solo debut album ‘Gnawa London’ was featured in Songlines Magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World Albums’ in September 2013. Throughout his career, Lagnawi has been featured on BBC World Service, CNN World, BBC 3, and BBC 6, and has played a host of festivals including Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Latitude and Boom Town
