The sixth edition of Tina Edwards’ jazz dancefloor party lands canal side at GROW Hackney on Saturday 17th May. Paying homage to classic jazz dance floor culture but with a modern twist.
ABOUT THE DJS
Joining us are purveyors of excellent taste and spotlighters of impeccable black music; the Handson Family. Come early for a FREE UK Jazz dance lesson from one of the world’s best, Masumi Endo, 7-8PM, catering to absolute beginners or dancers who want to brush up on their foundational techniques. Fancy footwork or simple two-step; the floor is yours.
DJs, selectors and increasingly tastemakers, Handson Family are somewhat of an enigma when it comes to describing exactly what they do. Fiercely proud of their irrespective South London heritages, married couple Chris and Cyndi have always leaned into uplifting and representing their community with an unwavering commitment to platform Black British music and club culture with an inclusive yet serious approach. Over the course of their career, the pair are fondly known for creating much needed third space music events in less conventional places with a DIY ‘Handson’ approach. Over the 20 years plus that they have worked together, their passion for genuine collaboration has seen them work with an array of notable musicians, DJs and events. Their own DJ sets are not to be underestimated. Their ability to weave genre-spanning narratives does not erode away from the often uplifting dancefloor energy they are able to produce, all whilst keeping their musical hearts and roots firmly deferential to the culture that raised them.
Tina Edwards is a DJ at the forefront of the UK Jazz explosion. In the wake of live acts breaking through onto major stages, it’s time for Jazz to dominate on the dancefloor. Having been a vocal pioneer of the UK scene for a decade—and DJing for the past 5—Tina proves that jazz and club culture are perfect partners.
WIth contagious energy and deep music knowledge—from West African groove and latin-house to 00’s Italo Jazz—Tina’s sets are never predictable. She performs across the UK and has played in Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Chicago and LA, all as an independent artist. She’s shared line-ups with Gilles Peterson, Colleen Murphy, Coco Maria, Scarlett O Malley, Delfonic, Rebecca Vasmant, Poly-Ritmo and more. Her party, Love is Everywhere, puts jazz dance floor at the forefront—along with Latin, Brazilian and house—and pays homage to the likes of Dingwalls and Shiftless Shuffle.
Tina hosts multi-genre new music show Next Big Thing on British Airways as well as her self-titled monthly residency on Soho Radio—not to mention the occasional Bandcamp Weekly. As one of Worldwide FM’s longest serving residents, Tina launched the popular breakfast show WW Daily, and hosted extra shows: EZH and Universal Sanctuary. In 2022 she presented the TV documentary JAZZ UK :Spitting Fire which aired on BBC One and BBC Four - testament to the fact that Tina is a trusted broadcaster and tastemaker. As a curator, she heads up Queer Jazz, promoting LGBTQIA+ talent in the jazz community, and re:sonate, programming far-reaching line-ups with fellow tastemaker, Tim Garcia.
