Join us for the next instalment of ROOTS with AWALE JANT BAND and Bulgarian roots artist MR. MORSKI, where Senegalese Soul meets Bulgarian Grooves
ROOTS
Grows in-house mid-week event series, Roots showcases the most unique, diverse and underexposed artists for an intimate night of musical discovery. The series emphasises Grows values of recognising and celebrating the diverse and interconnected roots of music and culture. Join us to explore the multiplicity of influences, connections, and trajectories that shape grassroots music in London.
AWALE JANT BAND
Expect an all-African celebration headed by "perhaps the greatest drummer ever" (Brian Eno) for a stripped-back, intimate session from the infamous Senegalese band, Awale Jant.
The name Awale Jant Band is a combination of Biram Seck’s Jant Band and Thibaut Remy’s London group Awale - a collective of African, French, British and Senegalese musicians performing for the last 10 years in London. Awale Jant Band’s name means to ‘let the sun pass through’ in Wolof.
For their event with us at Grow, they’ll play songs featured from their album, YEWOULEN’ which was their first signed album for international release on the ARC Music label. “It’s a call for people to and wake up from their usual ways, to wake up to what unites them, to look at how they can work together as opposed to their differences”. This is reflected in the title track ‘Yewoulen’ with its mixed elements of jazz improvisation with sabar drummings (Senegalese drum).
The album features songs of peace and unity sung in Wolof by Biram Seck. Electrifying rhythmic explorations between drums and Senegalese sabar drums while the horn section travels from Ethiojazz to Fania All Stars seamlessly. “We’d like people to feel with this music that joins the dots between cultures.”
Singer-songwriter Biram Seck is from Dakar, the son of a gawlo (story-teller). Biram’s father was a master of the traditional West African guitar/banjo, the xalam. As Biram says,"I love music because it is a means of communicating ideas to broaden minds and build an integrated world... a world of peace!”
MR MORSKI
Much loved by the global music community, Bulgarian star Mr Morski, (Miroslav Atanasov) is a musician, composer and performer with a wide range of repertoire and a unique ability to mix styles from across the globe. Pioneer of Balkan Rock in UK with The Turbans and Gipsydelica and known in Bulgaria for his work and success with Django Ze, Mr. Morski represents one of the most unique, high-energy and exciting emerging artists in the underground London scene.
