IN CONVERSATION WITH MARCIA CARR - PART OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Join us for In Conversation with Marcia Carr, an inspiring all-female panel talk shining a spotlight on its incredible guests' talents, skills, and experiences. Hosted by Marcia Carr—internationally acclaimed DJ for 40 years and founder of the all-female, all-vinyl club night Girlz B Like at Grow Hackney, a pioneering former street/jazz dancer, and founder of a music PR and artist agency. This discussion dives into the highs and lows of working within the music industry, exploring themes of Black British culture, business, and our collective history. Two guests who have been working in the London music industry are joining Marcia for the talk.

Lady Banton: Seduction City Sound’s powerhouse and the UK’s No. 1 female sound system operator. Since forming her first all-female sound system in 1985, Lady Banton has performed at Notting Hill Carnival for nearly three decades. Passionate about vinyl and dedicated to mentoring young women, she continues to champion sound system culture.

Twiggles: A “Wild Life photographer” capturing the raw energy of London’s nightlife. After years of dancing and connecting with the city’s vibrant underground scene, Twiggles transitioned to photography, documenting the flamboyant and decadent side of London that many overlook. Her second solo exhibition, See What I See, was held at JM Gallery in 2023, featuring large-format prints from the last few years.

This conversation will delve into the intersections of culture and music, offering a rare look into the challenges and triumphs of carving a space in the industry. Don’t miss this chance to hear from these trailblazers as they share their stories, insights, and perspective

This is part of a Black-led Events Series ranging from spoken word, poetry, and jazz, to live percussion, talks, Q&As and legendary DJs. At each of these events, we’re offering 20 free spaces to those with a Hackney Postcode.

All artists are existing partners of Grow and offer a breadth of experience and passion. All established in their creative disciplines, these Black-led events intend to inspire and share stories of culture, journey and heritage all underpinned by the theme of this year's BHM, which is reclaiming the narrative. MATT JOHNSON (JAMIROQUAI) & THE OBERHEIM OB-X8 // PERFORMANCE + Q&A

Oberheim is back! The launch of the OB-X8 earlier this year heralded the return of this renowned synth brand after many decades of absence. And now, Oberheim is excited to invite you to London for an exclusive and intimate showcase of this landmark instrument accompanied by legendary keyboardist, producer, and pivotal member of Jamiroquai - Matt Johnson.

For the last 20-years, Matt has been the keyboard player for Jamiroquai, co-writing most of the band’s releases during that time, and establishing himself as one of the most talented and prolific keyboard players of the last two decades.

Matt is already a seasoned user of the vintage and much-loved OB-Xa, and frequently demonstrates his love of both modern and vintage synths through his YouTube channel. We are therefore thrilled to be hosting an evening of live performance, Q&A and networking with Matt at Grow - an independent creative venue in East London’s Hackney Wick.

Join us from 7pm for welcome drinks, followed by a 90-minute interview, jam session and Q&A with Matt from 7:30pm. You’ll then have an opportunity to network with other synth enthusiasts, get hands on with an array of synths from the Oberheim and Sequential line-ups and chat with Matt and leading product specialists.
